How to: Celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

The feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows in September 15th this year. It is a feast day acknowledging the deep connection and ultimately sadness Our Lady experienced being the mother of our Lord. It is tied to the Biblical references in both Luke, when the prophet Simeon tells Mary about the death of Jesus and in John, when Jesus gives his mother to John, the disciple whom he loved.

Here at The Little Rose Shop, we connect deeply with Our Lady of Sorrows. She has held us close through times of deep and intense suffering. She is the inspiration, the hope, and the comfort we have held onto in times of desolation and hardship. We even wrap our babies up in our beautiful minky blanket when they are feeling sick.

Here are two simple and practical ways to honor Our Lady of Sorrows this feast day:

  1. Sit with someone in their grief and sorrow. Don’t offer platitudes or false comfort, just be there and listen.
  2. Recited the Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows.

Our mother of sorrows, with strength from above you stood by the cross, sharing in the sufferings of Jesus, and with tender care you bore Him in your arms, mourning and weeping.

We praise you for your faith, which accepted the life God planned for you. We praise you for your hope, which trusted that God would do great things in you. We praise you for your love in bearing with Jesus the sorrows of His passion.
Holy Mary, may we follow your example, and stand by all your children who need comfort and love.

Mother of God, stand by us in our trials and care for us in our many needs. Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
Amen!
