The Little Rose Shop and Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Little Rose Shop and Our Lady of Guadalupe

How do you even begin a blog post on a feast day and on a woman who means so much to us at The Little Rose Shop?

At the very beginning.

It starts with family.

My mother’s family is from New Mexico. Growing up, we were immersed with tradition and culture from New Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe was the first version and first title of Mary that I was familiar with. Her radiant blue and gold stars, brilliant shower of roses, and loving gaze felt like home and felt like family. Her effect on my childhood left and remains a lasting image and inspiration. I know I am not alone in this sentiment.

Walking to Mass on the morning of December 9th, 1531, peasant Juan Diego heard the sound of birdsong. Looking for the origin of the sound, he came upon a brilliant apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She appeared as a native princess to him, speaking his native tongue. She asks him to build a temple on the site to hear the people's petitions and heal the suffering of the Mexican people. The bishop refused Juan Diego’s request from Our Lady.

Juan Diego, asking for a sign to show the Bishop, climbs to the top of the hill to pick flowers, hiding them in his tilma. When he opens his tilma to show the bishop, the roses cascaded out, but more surprisingly on the inside of his tilma was painted an unbelievable image of Our Lady.

Rich with symbolism, the image shows that Our Lady is more powerful than the Aztec gods, yet she is not God. Her gown is covered in the stars of the night sky, she is brighter than the sun, and she is the mother of all. Millions of indigenous people convert and millions more pilgrim to pay homage to her miraculous tilma.

It is no wonder of her importance throughout history and her importance to The Little Rose Shop. Check out our creations inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe.
