Marian Ladybug Summer Tote
Meet your new favorite summer tote! Perfect for picnics, pool days, and weekend getaways! There’s also a fun secret meaning in the design - Ladybugs!🐞
During the Middle Ages, crops were plagued by small insects, leading to devastating crop failures. The people began praying for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to save their crops. Our Lady responded by sending red and black flying beetles who ate the plaguing aphids, miraculously saving the food crops. In thanksgiving, the bugs were titled, “Our Lady’s Beetle.” With time, the name was shortened to “ladybeetle” or “ladybird” and today, affectionately know as “ladybug”. Additionally, the Blessed Virgin Mary is often wearing red in medieval art and ladybugs are also commonly seen with seven black spots, making the connection to Mary with her seven joys and seven sorrows.
To remember this fun connection to Our Lady, the front of the bag is adorned with a patch depicting the Marian Cross, an “M” beneath a cross, signifying Mary being united with Christ’s suffering at the foot of the cross.
We hope this bag joins you on many adventures, and maybe inspires you to say a quick prayer of thanksgiving each time you see a ladybug!
