Motherhood is a gift - there's no denying this. But when that gift takes the form of finding snacks, folding laundry, driving to practice, and breaking up fights, it can be much more difficult to find the beauty in it. Mothers know in their depth of their souls that their children are a blessing, and the experience of motherhood should be cherished. But it can be so challenging to appreciate it all during the mundane and overwhelming aspects of life with kids.
I am forever grateful for the gift of the Communion of Saints. Many of them were mothers themselves, who understood the struggle in a very personal way. Others knew how to articulate not only the gift that children are to mothers, but that mother's are to society, and the entire world.
I find it helpful to reflect on what some of these Saints have said in regards to motherhood. It helps to keep things in perspective, and inspires me to continue to fight the good fight, and raise my kids to be Saints for the Kingdom.
I hope these few quotes bring you consolation and encouragement in your journey to be the mother God is calling you to be.
"Mamma, mamma"
"Am I not here who am your Mother?"
"Put your sufferings like a chisel in the hands of a master sculptor."
"Loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God"
"Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature."
