How we are celebrating Our Lady of Fatima

In 1917, Mother Mary appeared to three peasant Portuguese children, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, and their cousin Lucia de Santos. 110 miles north of Lisbon, Portugal, Our Lady appeared to the children at the Cova de Iria near Fatima. Mary asked the children to pray the rosary for world peace, the end of World War I, for sinners, and the conversion of Russia.

Mary appeared to the children multiple times. She gave the children three secrets: a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a vision of hell, and a “bishop in white” who was shot by a group of soldiers. Many people associate the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 with the third secret.

The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in 1930 and added to the worldwide calendar in 2002.

From these apparitions, we can take away the very clear message from Our Mother, Pray. We can faithfully respond to her request by keeping the Lord’s commandments, consecrating our homes and hearts to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and praying the Holy Rosary everyday.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!

Blessed Jacinta and Francisco, pray for us!
