How to Sew a Bow Hair Scrunchie: Easy Catholic Fabric DIY Project

DIY Bow Hair Scrunchie Tutorial: A Simple and Uplifting Catholic Fabric Project

There’s something special about slowing down and making something with your hands—especially when it’s for someone you love. This DIY Bow Hair Scrunchie project is a gentle, beginner-friendly sewing tutorial designed to bring beauty, purpose, and a little encouragement into your everyday routine. It’s a perfect project for Catholic moms and families looking to combine creativity and intention in a fun and simple way.

Whether it becomes your daughter’s go-to scrunchie for school mornings or a sweet handmade gift for a goddaughter or niece, this scrunchie made with our Beloved Wildflowers fabric is a reminder that you are worthy, beautiful, valuable, and beloved.

At The Little Rose Shop, we believe that beauty and faith belong in the ordinary moments. Even in a simple act like tying up your hair, there's a quiet way to live intentionally. Let’s get sewing.

Supplies Needed

  • Fabric: Beloved Wildflowers from The Little Rose Shop
  • ¼ yard of lightweight cotton (cotton lawn or quilting cotton recommended)
  • Elastic (¼” wide, 7-8” length)
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine (or needle for hand-stitching)
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Safety pin for threading elastic
  • Iron (optional but helpful)

We recommend using Beloved Wildflowers fabric because its soft, inviting floral design adds a peaceful touch to any project. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to wear something meaningful and uplifting, even on ordinary days.

How-To

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

Use your fabric scissors or rotary cutter to cut the following pieces:

  • Scrunchie base: 4.5” x 21”
  • Bow piece: 3” x 14” (or adjust to your preferred bow size)

Step 2: Sew the Scrunchie Base

Fold the 4.5” x 21” strip lengthwise, right sides together. Sew along the long edge with a ¼” seam allowance to form a tube. Leave a 2" gap along the edge, near one side. Take a safety pin and pierce the end that is away from the gap and push the safety pin inside the tube to begin turning it right side out, but stop to align the two ends. Once you get to the end, align the side seams and pin around the small loop. Sew the small loop and turn the entire scrunchie out through the gap we left.

Step 3: Thread the Elastic

Use a safety pin to thread your elastic through the tube. Once it’s all the way through, overlap the elastic ends by ½” and sew them together securely.

Step 4: Close the Tube

Tuck in the raw edges of the gap we left inside the scrunchie and sew it closed.

Step 5: Sew the Bow

Cut out your bow shape. Fold the bow piece right sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a 2” gap in the middle. (You can sew a soft taper at both ends to create a more pointed shape. Just trim off extra fabric!) Turn it right side out, press with an iron, and top-stitch or hand-sew the gap closed.

Step 6: Tie and Finish

Tie the bow around your scrunchie and adjust as needed. You can leave it loose or stitch it in place.

Now you’ve created something practical and beautiful.

FAQs

Is this a beginner-friendly sewing project?

Yes! This project is perfect for beginners. Even if you’re new to sewing, you’ll be surprised by what you can create.

Can I hand-sew this if I don’t have a machine?

Yes, hand-sewing works fine for this project. It just takes a little more time and patience. Use it as a moment to slow down and reflect—hand-stitching can be very peaceful.

Can kids help with this?

Definitely! Older children can help with cutting fabric, threading the elastic, or even doing simple sewing. It’s a great family project that encourages creativity and connection: let a child pick fabric, press seams, or help pin. Use the time to affirm them: “You bring so much light,” “Your creativity matters to God and to me.”

How should I care for the scrunchie?

Hand wash or machine wash on gentle. Air dry to protect the elasticity and preserve the colors of your fabric.

Can I make multiple scrunchies with one piece of fabric?

Yes—¼ yard can make about 2–3 scrunchies depending on how you use your fabric. It’s a great way to use leftover scraps, too!
